City of Gulfport and MDOT working to revitalize land in downtown

The City of Gulfport called a special meeting today to discuss what they want to do with a plot of land in downtown.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation owns the land in west downtown Gulfport and currently, it’s sitting vacant.

The City of Gulfport is working with MDOT to get approval for turning the empty land into a grass-park.

This would help with getting rid of the dilapidated property while also growing downtown. Mayor Billy Hewes said, “The natural growth path for downtown is to the west connecting to 30th Avenue. We’ve got entertainment districts that are in the area, and we just kind of want to build those out so they’ll be attractive to visitors, travelers, people who want to do business. Maybe established businesses down there. We’ve got longer plans across 30th Avenue at the quarter, so there’s many districts we want to see improvement across this city.”

This is still an early project so the council is still working on some legal aspects.
