City of Diamondhead moving forward with plans to create police force

DIAMONDHEAD, Miss. (WXXV)- The City of Diamondhead is one step closer to having its own police department.

Tuesday night, city leaders voted to move forward with plans to create a local force, a move that would end years of relying on the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.

News 25’s Everett Ganier Jr. has the update.

Since becoming a city, Diamondhead has relied on the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement services.

The vote does not create the department immediately, but it does authorize city officials to continue developing a plan.

That plan includes budget projections, staffing needs, equipment costs, and a potential timeline for hiring a police chief.

City leaders say they plan to keep residents informed as details are finalized.
