City of Biloxi: It’s a ‘no’ to toll on the Popp’s Ferry Bridge
The City of Biloxi says it is a no for turning the Popp’s Ferry Bridge into a toll bridge.
City officials have rejected a private developer’s proposal to replace the aging drawbridge with a new one funded by tolls.
Mayor FoFo Gilich told the developer there just wasn’t enough support. Officials say the 43-year-old drawbridge is in need of repairs and some have advocated for replacing it altogether.
Residents were sharply divided when the proposal for a toll bridge became public in November.
The plan would have widened the bridge and raised it, eliminating the need for a drawbridge that stops traffic, but adding a toll was too tall of an ask with many saying they’d drive out of their way to avoid the bridge.
