City of Biloxi Hosting Civil Rights Program

The City of Biloxi is remembering the men, women and children who stood up for Civil Rights on Biloxi Beach in the late 1900’s.
The May Preservation Series continues, this week paying a tribute to those who fought to desegregate the beach back in the 1950’s and 60’s. The City of Biloxi is hosting a program focusing on the historical beach wade-ins at the Frank Gruich Senior Community Center tomorrow. The city tells News 25 it’s important for people on the Coast to remember how far we’ve come. Biloxi Public Affairs Manager Vincent Creel said, “Those beaches here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast weren’t always opened to everyone. So, what this ceremony is going to do on Thursday at 5 o’clock is it’s going to be a remembrance of how far we’ve come and it’s going to pay a homage to those who were leading the charge out there 50 years ago.”
The free program is part of the community’s annual month-long salute to Biloxi’s historical past. A reception will also follow the event.
