City of Bay St. Louis honors Ellis Cuevas with Heritage Star

Residents of Bay St. Louis gathered downtown today to honor a community member who served the city his whole life.

The Hancock County Community Development Foundation, Bay St. Louis Rotary Club, and other community members gathered outside 200 North Beach Restaurant to help unveil a Heritage Star in honor of the late Ellis Cuevas.

Cuevas spent much of his life serving the city. He was known for his many roles in the city including publisher for the Sea Coast Echo, Hancock County Chamber of Commerce president, Rotary Club member, and so much more.

He was also the owner of multiple awards including 1991 Hancock County Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Citizen of the Year.

The city decided to unveil his star on April 6th because it’s Cuevas’ birthday. Former Sea Coast Echo Editor and Publisher Randy Ponder said, “I’m really happy to see this day. It means a lot to me personally, and I know it does to the Cuevas family. Ellis was, I think in my opinion in his lifetime, maybe he was under appreciated for all of the things he did. He was referred to as Mr. Hancock County and he earned that title because he was involved in so much.”

Cuevas died on July 13th, 2021 at the age of 87.
