Cities preparing for New Year’s Eve celebrations

We’re just two days away until we ring in the New Year and cities across South Mississippi are preparing now for big New Year’s Eve events.

Ocean Springs and Pascagoula are two of the latest cities on the Coast to join the New Year’s Eve Countdown Celebration. In Ocean Springs, a special disco ball will get the dancing started in downtown to ring in the new year. Ocean Springs Community Relations Ravin Nettles said, “So we’ve designed an iconic structure to drop. A nice ball, a disco ball that’s fun and sparkling and we just hope people will come down and have a good time.”

Ocean Springs New Year’s Eve Celebration will take place on the corner of Government Street and Washington Avenue. “What’s more fun than a disco ball? Just showing magic and sparkle and you know, Ocean Springs we believe is truly the gem on the coast. So, we’re going to drop that ball 60 feet from the air from a ladder truck.”

On Sunday at 2 p.m., two blocks will be closed from DeSoto Street to Bowen Avenue and Washington to Bellande Avenue intersecting with Government Street for setup of the entertainment.

Over in Pascagoula, they’re dropping an anchor from the newly renovated City Centre of Pascagoula. Main Street Pascagoula Executive Director Susannah Northrop said, “So, Pascagoula is a maritime city, as everyone knows, but an anchor symbolizes hope, and you know, Pascagoula just has a lot of hope, and we’re really excited to have that symbol as part of our New Year’s Eve Drop. It’s really exciting. We’ve never had a New Year’s Eve event in Downtown Pascagoula before.”

Pascagoula’s stage will be on the corner of Delmas Avenue and Magnolia Street with tons of lights and entertainment. “We’re inviting everybody, people of all ages. We’ll have a light show and we’ll also have performances from Coast Motel and US Band.”

Bay St. Louis and Margaritaville Resort will also do their take on the New Year’s Eve Ball Drop.

Ocean Springs and Pascagoula begin its festivities at 8 p.m. reminding its citizens to have fun, but be safe.

Some casinos and local hotels also have fun events to ring in 2024.
