Christmas trash could bring criminals to your home

For many, the holiday season is the most joyful time of year. The good times can quickly turn bad if you become a victim to a home burglary.

News 25’s Kristen Anzuini has tips on how to keep you and your family safe after the holidays.

‘Twas the day after Christmas and all through the Coast, trash cans were filled up the very most. Major Chris De Back with Biloxi PD said, “Anyone can drive-by and see what you got for Christmas and what Santa brought you and they might invite themselves in your house and we don’t want that.”

The Biloxi Police Department is extra busy this time of year due to holiday related crimes. “Anytime around the holidays you see an uptake in thefts and when people see things out by the curb, it’s an advertisement.”

One of the easiest ways to keep criminals at bay is to put all of your holiday boxes at the bottom of the trash bag. If you have access to one, use a dumpster so criminals can’t see what you got for Christmas. “You can take those boxes and cut them up so they fit down in the bottom so they are unseen. You can take them to a dump site or you can even, if you live out in the county, you can have a fire and burn the boxes,” said Major De Back.

If you would like to wait and recycle your boxes, there will be three cardboard recycling events this Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at the D’Iberville Work Center, The Harrison County Work Center, and at Long Beach Harbor.
