Chef teaches classes on how to make sushi at Pass Christian Library

Folks are rolling with style at the Pass Christian Library.

A sushi class led by chef and author Steve DeWitt was held earlier today. The classes have been going on at the library for over a decade.

Monday’s class was held for teens and adults. Tuesday’s class will be held for families to learn the art of the sushi roll.

The head librarian and class chef both spoke on the purpose of this fun event. Head Librarian Wendy Allard said, “People love it. Steve DeWitt is the one who came up with the idea and I think he did it, it’s been ten years, because he was doing it for adults and then we asked him if he wanted to do it for the families because it’s just a nice family activity when they’re out of school for the summer. So, as I’ve said, we’ve been doing it for a long time.”

Chef Steve DeWitt said, “The reason behind it is just to find people that are interested in cooking. Kind of like expanding the horizon and getting their hands dirty and just learning new things.”

While most who attended were there to learn a new culinary skill. One attendee spoke on why the class teaches important life skills for her daughter. Attendee Peggy Howse said, “You can call it culinary, but I like to call it life skills since I get to take her home, go shopping for the ingredients, and she cooks it for us or makes it for us which she does all the time.”
