Charter School Expansion Bill Passes

Both education committees in the Mississippi Legislature have passed bills that would allow students to attend public charter schools located in districts outside their own.
As the law stands now, students must live in the school district where the charter school is created in order to attend. The proposed bill would not only allow students to go outside their own district to a charter school and their state money would follow them but it would also remove the requirement that C-rated school districts obtain school board approval before a charter is allowed to open. Right now, charter schools may only be opened in D or F districts. The only two in the state are both in Jackson.
