Changes Coming to DHS
Two-thirds of all children in foster care in our state are in the three coastal counties.
That’s according to Senator Brice Wiggins who spoke in front of the Jackson County Republican Club today, along with Senator Michael Watson and Representative Hank Zuber.
Wiggins described this year’s session as the year of the child, stating that although revenue was down they were able to put one million dollars into early learning collaboratives and $35 million into addressing the foster care system.
A portion of that money will go to a new children and family services division out from under DHS that will hone in specifically on children’s issues. “To address what a negative situation it is in foster care and we owe it not only as public servants but as Mississippians and as Christians to stand by these children and do right by them,” said Senator Wiggins.
BP money will be the topic of the next club meeting. Senator Michael Watson will return with Senator Charles Busby to discuss and answer questions about those concerns.
