Ceremony honors life of former Governor William Winter and his wife Elyse
Today, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History held a ceremony to honor the life of former Governor William Winter and his wife, Elyse.
Special guest speakers were invited to the event including former President Bill Clinton, former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, and former Mississippi Supreme Court Justice Reuben Anderson.
Winter served as governor of Mississippi from 1980 to 1984 and is nationally acclaimed for his passage of education reform legislation.
He was eventually appointed to President Clinton’s National Advisory Board on race. President Clinton said, “All I know is the minute I met Bill Winter, I never had a scintilla of doubt that whatever happened in our friendship – whatever happened in his life – I was with one of the most authentic people I would ever know.”
Governor William Winter died on December 18th, 2020 at the age of 97 and Elyse died on July 17th, 2021 at the age of 95.
