Celebrating the unconditional love of our furry family members

National Dog Day is set aside to celebrate the love, loyalty and companionship that our furry family members bring to our lives.

WXXV Assistant News Director Kate Holzhauser and her husband Tom lost their long haired German Shepherd Kaiya this weekend.

Today, my husband Tom and I are celebrating our Sweet Girl, Kaiya.

The long-haired German Shepherd was adopted when she was 3 years old and was a gentle soul who loved her humans.

In her younger years, she would spin for treats and particularly loved her duck jerky.

Fearful of strangers, she often was content to hang out in the master bathroom when company came over.

But she did love her humans unconditionally — including our granddaughter, Raven, who loved to give Kaiya her treats when she visited.

Kaiya crossed the Rainbow Bridge on Sunday morning at 15 years old. She is at peace and we’re at peace with that.

Happy National Dog Day, Kaiya. We love you, Sweet Girl.
