‘Celebrate the Gulf’ event educates children in Pass Christian

‘Celebrate the Gulf’ kicked off at War Memorial Park on Saturday.

This was the celebration’s 29th year and every year they help teach youth about wildlife on the Coast.

Sharks, birds, fish, kids got up close and personal with many of these creatures while learning about their native habitats.

There was also a poster contest and a children’s coloring contest, the winning artwork for the poster contest was featured on the event’s flier. Celebrate the Gulf Chair Avery Beck said, “The turnout so far, we thought it was going to be rainy and everything, it looks like it’s beautiful and sunny. In past years we’ve had 5,000 to 7,000 people just in our timeframe from 10 to 3, so we’re hoping we can exceed that this year.”

Celebrate the Gulf Vice Chair Jennifer Cumbest said, “So we’re scientists, and our main goal when we do science is to educate the public. And so, we have such a great resource in the Gulf of Mexico, so it’s really important that the next generation of students and kids learn the importance of that so that they can then protect it for their future as well.”

Celebrating the Gulf started in 1992.
