Carl Legett Memorial Fishing Tournament wraps up
The 24th annual Carl Legett Memorial Fishing Tournament put on by the Home Builder’s Association has come and gone. This year’s tournament had larger numbers than what they’ve seen in the past.
This year the tournament had over 325 fishermen participating and 250 kids for their kids tournament. One of the biggest catches the tournament saw this year was on Saturday with Mark Swank catching an 82.8 pound yellowfin tuna.
This tournament was started in honor of Carl Legett after he passed away in 1995. Legett was a Gulfport native, an Air Force veteran, and a staple in the Home Builders Association.
This tournament is family oriented and organizers are just happy they are getting to keep Legett’s memory alive all while supporting worthy causes such as the Boys and Girls Club and the Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence. Carl Legett Memorial Fishing Tournament Vice President Matt Compton said, “The events and the tournament have always stayed kid friendly and very family-oriented which that’s what he was all about is family and that’s why we started the whole cookout and to just try to bring everybody together and enjoy each other you know. So, I mean, I think he would be very happy with the way it is going.”
Compton and other organizers hope for an even bigger turn out next year.
