Car Crimes On Rise During Holidays

Every year police see an increase of robberies and other crimes during the holiday season.

News 25’s Gina Tomlinson spoke to Biloxi residents living in the neighborhood where it happened–who have also had a break in.

Police say the crime was caught on camera near the Sunkist Manor Subdivison Sunday. Lynda peer has lived in this community for over forty years and although she has forms of protection…

“She won’t let anybody near us.”

She was surprised a break in would happen just streets away.

“It’s quiet nice, relatively quiet, almost like a retirement community so to hear this is unusual”

Residents in neighboring subdivisions in Biloxi like Enrique Vanegas haven’t been so lucky.

“About a year ago I had a break in on my car… Because of that I’ve had to put my security system in my home”

Multiple security cameras are now set up outside Vanegas’s house…he says after his own experience with an attempted vehicle theft, he’s not taking any chances.
Vanegas says there’s been other suspicious activity in his neighborhood lately, like people roaming around in the middle of the night.

“They pretend to walk, like exercising but obviously they are not from here because I don’t know them,”

Police say during the holiday season, crime is on the rise.

“They need to get whatever they need for their family, and that’s when you’ll see or hear on the news a lot of Christmas decorations going missing from yards, people don’t have it so they do what they can to get it”

“Police say you can stay protected by always remembering to lock up and by keeping your valuable items out of sight.”
