Captain Pete Skrmetta Honored

Ship Island Excursions is a true staple to the Coast for not only tourists, but Coast residents as well.
This morning, The Mississippi Gulf Coast Attractions Association honored one of the men who started it all. Captain Pete Skrmetta began skippering his father’s boat in the late 40s. He’s been a mainstay ever since.
The association honored Skrmetta with the ‘Don Jacobs Lifetime Achievement Award’ which recognizes Coast icons in the world of tourism.
Over the years, Ship Island Excursions has taken millions to the popular barrier island but Captain Skrmetta says that’s not his greatest accomplishment. “Raising four sons, married to a good woman for 60 years. We’re religious people, we go to church together.”
President of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Attractions Association Liz Kessie said, “It has opened up a piece of history to the tourists that they wouldn’t ordinarily have. You know, how are you going to get out there if you don’t have your own boat? Not many tourists bring their own boats.”
From April to November, Ship Island Excursions ferries more than 50,000 people to Ship Island.
