Camp Awesome campers reunite and dance

Everyone was grooving and moving inside the West Harrison Community Center in Long Beach.

Camp Awesome campers held a reunion and built-up excitement for their upcoming camp.

This summer camp strives to make everyone feel included and part of their camp family. Camp Awesome is for children and adults with special needs and they host two overnight camps yearly at Camp Wilkes in Biloxi.

News 25 spoke to a couple of former and future campers. Both are counting down the days until it is time again for the awesome camp.

Camper William Scully said, “Doing some fun activities like dancing.”

Camper Nick said, “I don’t know. Don’t know what activities are there, but I’m excited for it. Go to Camp Awesome, you’ll love it.”

Camp Director Honey Leblanc said, “We pair up teenage volunteer counselors one on one with the campers and our adult staff run all the activities. It’s a really good opportunity. It’s not just for the kids with disabilities, it’s great for the teenagers. It’s life changing for them, too.”

The dance floor will be packed again tomorrow night for Camp Awesome’s biggest fundraiser, the $2,500 drawdown.

They’ll be selling tickets at the door from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Tickets are $40 and admit two people.
