C-USA Tournament: No. 1 Southern Miss vs. No. 8 UTSA
Last week the Southern Miss baseball team put an exclamation point on the best regular season in school history with a three game sweep at UTSA.
The Golden Eagles outscored the Roadrunners 39-13, but you wouldn’t have known that based on the first day of the Conference USA Tournament.
MGM Park making its debut for hosting the event, USM looking to defend its crown as last year’s tournament champions.
Southern Miss would never lead in this game, committing three errors and leaving ten runners on base certainly didn’t help.
USM falls into the loser’s bracket with the 9-2 loss. Here’s Coach Berry on the challenge ahead. “It’s baseball. You’re going to have one of those games, you just hope it’s not at the wrong time. And right now I don’t know if there is a right time to have one, but we’re still playing baseball. We just came off from a great regular season with 44 wins and 12 losses, 14 straight wins, at some point it’s going to happen. It happened, we’ve got to move on, that’s the bottom line. So I wish it was a different story for you, but it’s not. Tomorrow we’ll see what we’re made of when we come out and how we respond, and that’s what I’m anxious to see right now.”
USM moves on to face the loser of Charlotte and Louisiana Tech in the losers bracket tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
