Busiest mailing and shipping week of the year
This week is expected to be the busiest week of the holiday mailing and shipping season for the postal service.
USPS expects to process and deliver nearly three billion pieces of first-class mail including greeting cards this week alone. The postal service anticipates delivering more than 15 billion total pieces of mail this holiday season. As Christmas Day approaches, the lines at local post offices are getting longer by the day.
Gulfport USPS Post Master Joann Burks says they are working their hardest to minimize wait times. “We have people out there in the lobby helping you prepare your packages and getting everything ready and address. So, when you get to the window it doesn’t take the clerk as long to process your packages and get them in the mail. We also have people in the back that will pull certified letters and parcels for you that you are wanting to pick up.”
Burks tells News 25 tomorrow is the deadline for first class packages and mail to be shipped out for expected delivery by Christmas Day. Customers have until December 20th to ship out priority mail and until the 22nd for priority mail express.
