Busiest day for local animal shelters
Fireworks are beautiful to look at, but can be very scary for our pets. Today, animal shelters around the country are trying to reunite animals that ran away after hearing fireworks.
July 5th is known as the busiest day of the year for animal shelters. This year is no exception. The loud screeching of fireworks plays a big part in causing pets to run away. Humane Society Volunteer Coordinator Valerie Kattz said, “I’d say over the last three days, because of course they start shooting fireworks before the Fourth of July, we’ve had about 58 animals come into our care. That breaks down to about 26 cats and 32 dogs.”
People constantly walked into the Humane Society of South Mississippi hoping to find their furry friend. Allan Luke is visiting here on the Gulf Coast. He lost his 12-year-old poodle Lucy. “She’s about 12 pounds, tan colored. She had a little red collar on.”
While others bring in pets they’ve found, Rachel Cawley brought in a lost white Husky. “While I was getting gas at the Pure Country on Canal Road and he just ran up behind me and started sniffing me and he had a leash attached to him. I knew he belonged to somebody and I walked around the gas station to see if anybody was looking for him and it didn’t seem like anybody was looking.”
The Humane Society strongly recommends pet owners get their pets micro-chipped and tagged which you can get instantly engraved at the Humane Society. “We do have a special so you can reunite with your pet more quickly if you get them micro-chipped and a tag. You can do that for only $15,” said Kattz.
Neither Lucy nor the Husky were micro-chipped or tagged, making it harder for the shelter to reunite them with their families. “Thankfully we’ve already been able to reunite some animals with their people, but there are still a lot of dogs out here that are looking for their families. If your pet is missing, please come to the shelter so we can reunite you,” said Kattz.
