Budget Cuts at the Department of Revenue Could Lead to Tax Delays

Possible delays could be in store for Mississippians waiting on their tax returns as a second round of midyear budget cuts hit the Mississippi Department of Revenue. This happened just as they are swamped with thousands of individual income tax filings.
Because of the cuts, the department had to send home 35 temporary workers who were hired to open mail. A department spokeswoman says other employees are working extra hours to try to catch up so that residents hopefully won’t see a delay on their returns.
The Department of Revenue’s budget has been cut by nearly $1.1 million, part of trims Governor Bryant made for many state agencies because tax collections have fallen short of expectations.
