Breast Cancer Research Day at Memorial Health System

Today is National Breast Cancer Research Day.

Memorial Health System and LSU are working to enroll more oncology patients into clinical trials.

The health system is incorporating a virtual research nurse program to provide more care in rural communities.

The VRN program works remotely to screen and enroll breast cancer patients in clinical trials.

Dr. Hamza Minhas is an oncologist at Memorial Hospital. He says screening is a key to early detection. “So, breast cancer is actually a very frequent cancer that is diagnosed here in the United States. It actually occurs in one in eight women, and one in every 833 men. Screening for breast cancer is an essential component in both diagnosing in an early stage and ensuring treatment can start at an appropriate time.”
