Bomb Squad Called to Gulfport

A bomb scare in Gulfport blocks traffic on 15th Street and 42nd Avenue for multiple hours this afternoon.
According to Gulfport Public Information Officer Sergeant Joshua Bromen, around 4:10, officers received a call that an individual was carrying a mortar shell. Bromen says he attempted to scrap the item he found on 14th Street, but clerks told him no because they could not identify the shell. After that he was en route to contact an officer when someone called authorities on him for carrying a suspicious object.
The Biloxi Bomb Squad was called in to determine what the metal device was. “Biloxi Bomb Squad was able to determine this was a training device. No threat to the community. One thing they did emphasize though is this is a device that didn’t need to be carried around by someone in the general public. Again, if you find anything like this please call 9-1-1 as soon as you locate the item because they said this device could have very easily been a live round,” said Sgt. Bromen.
Bromen says the device is a training rifle-style round and not a mortar round.
