Black light installation had final day on Friday
Studio Waveland’s black light installation had their final day of exhibition on Friday.
It was master minded by glass sculptors Mitchell Gaudet and Erica Larkin Gaudet, with contributions from eighteen additional artists.
The event coincided with the city of Waveland’s monthly “Food Truck Friday” event, which ran out front.
As the sun began to set on the festivities, the art in the gallery transformed.
All of the artwork is created using black light paints, fluorescent textiles, and even uranium glass.
James Flynn, a contributing artist, described the intentional effect of the gallery’s natural sunlight.
“As the sun starts to set and the white light diminishes, as it gets darker and darker in the gallery, the work will start to fluoresce more ands more,” Flynn said. “It’s an interactive show. The art is intended for you to walk around it, walk through it, fluoresce with it.”
Flynn described his own work as “choromoluminarism,” a technique of layering separate bands of color.
He said his works are meant to challenge perception.
