Black History program at Lyman Elementary School
Students at Lyman Elementary School put on a Black History play to educate their classmates on several Civil Rights leaders.
The play featured three parts. The first part, “Yes, Black Americans Invented That,” featured a class of students being educated on the everyday items we use created by African-Americans. The second part, “Who am I,” took a group of kids on a museum tour where statues of historical figures came to life to tell their story. The final part, “This Seat is Taken,” was all about Rosa Parks’ refusal to give up her seat.
While students who participated in the play learned a lot about these historical figures, they also showed their classmates what they are capable of. Third grader Kameron Bolden played Martin Luther King Jr. He said, “I really enjoyed it. I actually had the opportunity to get myself out to the other people that didn’t know what was inside of me.”
A door decoration competition coincided with the play. Students came up with an idea on their own and decorated their class’s door commemorating Black History Month.
