Biloxi’s Colt Keith drafted by Detroit Tigers no. 132 overall

Leading up to the 2020 MLB first year player draft, no high school baseball player from the state of Mississippi has been hyped up more than Biloxi’s Colt Keith.

The former Gatorade Player of the Year came into day two of the draft with high hopes of hearing his name called and those hopes became a reality in the fifth round courtesy of the Detroit Tigers.

Actually the very first pick of the fifth round as the 132nd player off the board despite being ranked as the 87th best prospect according to MLB Pipeline.

Technically Keith now has a big decision to make as an Arizona State signee back in December, but he tells News 25 that it’s pretty safe to say he’s signing with the Tigers despite slipping all the way into the fifth round.

His slot value at 132 is $426,600, more than $200,000 less than it would have been in the 87 range.

What a steal for the Tigers who get a five tool player on the left side of the infield that hit over .500 during both his sophomore and junior seasons.

Keith could even wind up being a two way player with a fastball that can touch 96.

Some high praise from one Minor League Baseball contributor saying: “Detroit just won the entire draft with Colt Keith. There may not be a prep I believe in more. This kid is legitimately Chase Utley in a can. Gorgeous swing, 55 plus hit tool, possible 50 power. Might need to shift to third base with his size. Big, big win.”

Keith is rated 10 out of 10 by Perfect Game.

Here’s Keith to News 25 just via text message: “I am truly grateful to the Detroit Tigers organization for giving me the opportunity to pursue my dream. Can’t wait to work my way through their system.”
