Biloxi testing emergency warning sirens
The first Wednesday of each month at noon from now until the end of hurricane season the City of Biloxi will test their ten warning sirens scattered around the city.
The minute long, citywide tests are to help alert residents to the dangers of a tornado or hurricane. During an actual emergency, the warning sirens will sound for three minutes instead of one.
The new emergency warning system was put to the test when Cindy passed over the Coast. The sirens meant to warn residents failed.
City officials say these regular tests will help them work out any glitches the sirens may have so they will be working for the next emergency. Cecilia Dobbs Walton with City of Biloxi Public Affairs said, ‘It’s a computer so there’s a recipe in there for every single siren and there was a little glitch. The recipe wasn’t written completely correctly for certain sirens. So when this happened, the emergency manager for the City of Biloxi received an alert saying they did not go off so she immediately contacted a technician who came and fixed that recipe, as they call it, for the sirens. They’ve had testings since then and they have gone off.”
Once you hear the tones lasting three minutes you should seek safe shelter immediately.
