Biloxi Shuckers salute Pearl River Community College’s National Championship pair
Between Wednesday’s games, the Biloxi Shuckers recognized the kings and queens of the junior college diamond, honoring both the Pearl River Community College baseball and softball teams following their NJCAA Division II World Series championships. Nearly two months after making history with matching national titles, head coaches Michael Avalon and Christie Meeks reflected on what it means to share that accomplishment side by side.
“There was a lot of work that went into it and maybe bigger than that was the belief. You had two coaches along with a lot of people that believed that we could do that, and that’s something that’s never been done before, so that tells you how hard it is and how special and unique it is,” said head baseball coach Michael Avalon. “I guess one of the words that have been stuck on my lips for the last couple of weeks is legacy. It’s a legacy that these guys and ladies have left and it’s really special. We proved it can be done, and now we want to do it again of course. It’s just so awesome and special.”
“I mean what a phenomenal community to be able to do this for and with the Shuckers! This is a huge stage and just to put all of this together as the king and queens of the diamond is awesome,” said head softball coach Christie Meeks. “I think being the king and queens of the diamond puts a lot more pressure on top of it, but what an amazing journey it’s been to continue building this program and to watch these girls flourish in what they get to do. That’s the biggest validation is to watch them move on and continue to be great in everything they have done.”
Special shoutout to Landon Watts and Natalee Eaves for throwing out the ceremonial first pitches!
