Biloxi Shuckers playoff push

On the eve of the Southern League Playoffs, it’s hard to ignore the kind of momentum the Biloxi Shuckers are taking in to the South Division Championship series.

It started with a record-setting 2018 campaign in which the Shuckers swept the Southern League South Division titles en route to a single-season franchise record 81 wins.

Here we are, two full seasons later with the Shuckers once again having swept the first and second half-titles on their way to yet another franchise best mark of 82 wins.

Not to mention the added excitement of hosting the Southern League All-Star Game for the very first time, the only thing missing is Biloxi’s first-ever Southern League championship.  Biloxi Shuckers Media Relations Manager and Broadcaster Garrett Greene said, “I mean this was a group of guys who wasn’t supposed to do this. Last year, we had seven first round picks and all kinds of top prospects that were on our team. And this year, people were saying, oh, well the Shuckers – they’ve got some veterans, they’ve got some younger guys. And so the fact that they’ve just gone out and just played baseball and played really good winning baseball and done what they weren’t supposed to do, I think that just serves as more fuel to the fire so it’s been incredibly entertaining. They’ve won in all kinds of different ways this year. They’ve won going away, they’ve won close and I really think that they’ve got as good of a shot as anybody. Once you get to this time of the year, it doesn’t matter what your record is. All you have to do is win six out of 10 games.”

First pitch for tomorrow’s game one against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos is set for 6:35 p.m. from MGM Park.

Now, let’s take a look back at the regular season that was for the Shuckers, highlighted by those four straight half-division titles, making them the first team to accomplish that feat since the Tennessee Smokies eight years ago.

Who can forget those two ten-game winning streaks down the stretch in the second half?

More recently, Trey Supak was named the Southern League’s Most Outstanding Pitcher, which helps explain the team’s 3.28 ERA, good for 13th best out of 120 teams in all of Minor League Baseball.
