Biloxi sand solution update
Biloxi Mayor Andrew ‘FoFo’ Gilich says the city is one step closer to solving the sand problem on Highway 90.
Mayor Gilich held a meeting earlier this week with a group of university researchers in an effort to come up with a solution for sand blowing on the roadway. He suggested building a seawall like the one Biloxi had in the 1920s before Hurricane Camille. Another idea from a researcher was using sea oats to catch the blowing sand and keep it off the highway.
Mayor Gilich says in the past few years the City of Biloxi has spent around half a million dollars removing sand from the highway. “MDOT and some of those different agencies, Sand Beach Authority, the county, as well as the City of Biloxi on the north side are all responsible for keeping that sand off the roadways and the structures that we need to actually get a plan to keep the sand on the beach where it’s supposed to be.”
Mayor Gilich asked the team to utilize a lower beach profile in the design plus reposition excess sand to widen the beach instead of buying new sand.
