Biloxi riding momentum from comeback win: Indians two wins away from 6A state title
Dead in the water down 16 points in the third quarter of Saturday’s quarterfinal thriller, the Biloxi Boys basketball team ended the game on a 39-14 run sparked by senior captain Caleb McCarty.
The 6’7” man in the middle scored 16 of his game high 28 points in the fourth quarter to complete a playoff comeback for the ages.
As a team, the Indians almost doubled their 33 points, going into the fourth, scoring 31 in that final period.
There’s something about doing it against rival Gulfport in the Coast Coliseum that gives Big Red a big boost heading into Wednesday’s Final Four match-up against Murrah. Biloxi Head Boys Basketball Coach Seber Windham said, “Like I said, we’ve got some kids that it’s their first time here, nervous. This kind of shakes some stuff off, playing in a big arena, playing in front of a lot of fans, playing in front of your home and playing against your rival. I feel like that’s kind of setting the stage that maybe helped us get over the hump. And I know we’re going to be nervous a little bit playing in the Jackson Coliseum, but at the end of the day it’s still 94 feet, the baskets are still 10 feet and we’ve still got Caleb McCarty.”
McCarty said, “It’s huge. I mean like I said, there’s no better feeling than beating your rival to get to Jackson. So I’m blessed that we were able to come out on top.”
Biloxi and Murrah will tip things off at 8:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson.
All together four Coast teams in the running for a gold ball and Harrison Central is responsible for two of them. The Red Rebelettes will take on Olive Branch at 4 p.m. Wednesday with the Red Rebels to follow against Starkville at 7 p.m.
Last but not least, Biloxi squaring off with Jackson-Murrah in the 8:30 nightcap. All games at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson.
