Biloxi police officer appointed head of Special Olympics MS
Beginning January 1st, Biloxi Assistant Chief of Police Chris De Back took on another title, but with the same goal of serving his community.
De Back is now Mississippi’s Special Olympics executive board chairman and will help direct the organization as well as promote and raise funds for Special Olympics.
Over the last two decades, De Back has been participating in the law enforcement torch run held before the games as well as serving on the board.
During his time with Special Olympics, De Back has been able to see athletes of all ages strive to reach their goals. “I remember one year I was at a swimming event and a young man that was in a wheelchair– once they put him in the pool he could do anything. He was like Superman, watching him. And it was just exciting to watch his eyes glow and be able to do anything he wanted in that pool.”
This year, Special Olympics Mississippi is sending more than 180 athletes to the USA Games in Orlando in June, the state’s largest team ever.
