Biloxi PD Warn Public of Phone Scam in Harrison County
The Biloxi Police Department has received several complaints of a telemarketing scheme asking for donations to local law enforcement. Returned calls to the alleged company are being directed to an automated system or are being disconnected. Biloxi Police want to ensure the public they are not soliciting money by phone and urge residents to hang up if they receive a similar call.
Brock Newell, an investigator for the Biloxi Police Department, says, “But if somebody receives that call, they should try to pin down is this actually a legitimate charity. If they’re interested in it, ask questions, get details, how is money going to be used, and before giving, call and confirm that, call the department, call the charity, check out these suspected scams or charities to verify that they in fact are legitimate.”
To check charities, you can go online to www.give.org and type in the charity’s name. Newell says this time of year, they see more charity scams than usual.
