Biloxi Needs Extra $1 Million to Complete Stadium on Time

The Biloxi City Council is considering an extra $1 million to open the Shuckers baseball stadium on April 21st.

City attorney, Gina Tompkins, told the Biloxi City Council that Biloxi does not have that money. Even if Biloxi did produce the $1 million, it would not ensure the stadium would open on time and the first impression people would have of the stadium would be a construction site. The city must pay a $10,000 fine for every home game that the stadium is not open.

Kenny Glavan, Biloxi City Council President, says, “We may be able to speed the process up. It may cost us some money, so we’ve gotta’ look at the penalties, which is $10,000 per game, see if it’s worth spending a little bit, and investing in speeding up the process, and if we can come up with a good plan to do that, I’m confident we can get our certificate of occupancy to play ball and we’ll move forward.”

Glavan hopes to have an answer next week on whether or not it will really cost an additional $1 million to play on opening day.
