Biloxi native Astronaut Fred Haise turns 92

We’re celebrating a legendary Biloxi native today on what is his 92nd birthday! NASA Astronaut Fred Haise was born in Biloxi on November 14, 1933.

Haise was the lunar module pilot on the famed Apollo 13 mission, which was aborted en route to the moon after an oxygen tank explosion in the service module.

The story of Apollo 13 crew’s complicated return to Earth was chronicled in a 1995 film of the same name.

After Apollo 13, Haise continued his work as an astronaut, helping with tests for the space shuttle program.

Here on the Coast, a statue of Haise was placed between the Biloxi Lighthouse and Lighthouse Pier in 2022.
