Biloxi may take CSX to court over deadly crossings

On March 7th a freight train crashed into a bus full of Texas tourists visiting Gulf Coast Casinos, killing four people in Biloxi. Over 40 people were hurt. Now a possible lawsuit involving the City of Biloxi is in the works.
Harrison County Supervisors have formally notified CSX that deficiencies exist at 29 different railroad crossings within the city. A letter on Biloxi’s behalf addressing the crossings was sent out a month ago.
A local attorney potentially pursuing legal action against CSX tells News 25 these crossings have a long history of problems. Attorney Matthew Mestayer said, “Obviously there’s an issue with the railroad crossings, not just of course the tragedy with the bus accident which of course everyone knows about, but there’s been a history of other problems, with not just the Main Street crossing, but other crossings as well so we believe there’s a serious issue and it needs to be addressed.”
CSX has 60 days to respond to the letter before any legal action is taken. Lawsuits by passengers aboard the bus that collided with the train are now filed in federal court.
