Biloxi hosts Street Smart Fair for Bicycle Safety Month
Are you street smart when it comes to bike safety?
That was put to the test in Biloxi on Friday.
May is National Bicycle Safety Month, local organizations and businesses at Hiller Park are promoting riders putting the pedal to the metal.
Cyclists and kids gathered for more than just games and refreshments.
Because bicycle incidents have risen significantly in the last decade, organizers want cyclists to be more attentive to bicycle safety.
Leaders of the Street Smart Fair offered cyclists safety resources and best practices on the road as well as the best areas to cycle.
Biloxi Bicycle Works co-founder Bart Luther shares some safety tips.
“Ride with the flow of traffic cars will see you cars will abide by you,” said Luther. “Ride with a group of people if you have a chance or ride our beautiful beach boardwalk there’s no cars on the beach boardwalk so it’s a great place to start getting acclimated with your bicycle.”
“I ride, almost every day it’s a lot of fun because I can race with my friends and stuff I go off road I drift all that stuff,” said Cannon Butler, a kid cyclist.
“It’s really fun to have to ride bikes and whenever you have bike safety if you like fall or something you’ll like you’ll have it so you won’t like get hurt,” said Linly Cothin, a kid cyclist.
“So, as safe cycling comes into effect not only does it help the the residents who live here, but it also is bringing in a lot of tourism dollars.” said Luther.
Luther suggests visiting your local bike shop or your city’s visitor center for more safe zones for recreational cycling.
