Biloxi community remembers Victor Mavar Sr.

Today, a funeral was held for one of Biloxi’s most respected men. Victor Mavar Sr. accomplished so much in his life and today friends and family said goodbye to him.

People gathered at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cathedral in Biloxi to pay respects to Victor Mavar Sr.

The line wrapped around the church, causing some people to stand in the middle of the road. The man known as the founder of the Mississippi Republican Party on the Coast died this past Saturday at the age of 96. Biloxi Mayor Andrew ‘FoFo’ Gilich said, “You just smile and remember when those conversations we had. Victor had the right thought when it came to this and that. I will always miss the idea Victor being there to kind of provide some insight and direction.”

Mavar was born in Biloxi in 1926. He graduated from Biloxi High School in 1943 and went on to become a successful businessman.

Mavar was elected president of the American Shrimp Processors Association and served as a director of Hancock Whitney Bank. MS Republican Party State Chairman Frank Bordeaux said, “His faith, devotion to family, his work ethic, what he’s done to help build the seafood industry here. Obviously in the party, he was always there to lend a helping hand to the party, but also to me personally.”

Bordeaux was not surprised to see the amount of people that was impacted by Mavar. “He was always there for the community. He did not speak very much, but when he spoke, it was something that everyone listened to. He is the king of Biloxi and will be missed by all of us.”
