Biloxi City Council votes in favor of Point Cadet waterfront enterprise project

Tonight, Biloxi Mayor FoFo Gilich proposed his plan for the Point Cadet waterfront enterprise to the city council.
After a lengthy discussion, the city councilman placed their votes, voting 6 to 1, adopting general legislation to authorize the City of Biloxi to make improvements to the Point Cadet property.
Councilman George Lawrence was the most skeptical about the project and was the only one to vote no during tonight’s meeting.
The intent of the mayor’s project is to develop the Biloxi waterfront experience by establishing an oyster aquaculture and conservation center, a seafood marketplace, and a public off-loading dock for oystermen, among other things.
The Point Cadet area is jointly owned by the city, the state, and the Institute of Higher Learning, meaning that moving forward all three parties must be in agreement. Cecilia Dobbs Walton with Biloxi Public Affairs said, “There’s lots of vacant space that isn’t used and the mayor just wants to get a joint effort to improve this property and make it more use for the public.”
The next step in realizing the Point Cadet waterfront enterprise is to take the legislation up to the state. Mayor Gilich said he believes the state will be open to the project because the city has proven to be profitable.
