Biloxi Bridge Groundbreaking

It was a true Who’s Who of Biloxi and Gulfport as city officials from both cities broke ground on the new Biloxi River Bridge. Today’s groundbreaking of the new bridge stems from years of discussion.
Initial estimates put a 9 million dollar price tag on the bridge, but the project is now expected to cost about 7 million. County leaders say it will bring a new look to a widely used road in Harrison County.
“It’s the third most traveled road and bridge in Harrison County. So it connects Gulfport and Biloxi. They don’t see lines when they’re going across that bridge”, said Connie Rockco, President of the Harrison County Board of Supervisors.
“You know we’re doing these projects for the good of the citizens in the communities of both cities. This was a real one coast moment. And we can all be proud in any city we live in”, said Kenny Glavan who is the Mayor of Biloxi.
The old Biloxi River Bridge was made of wood. The new version will be made of concrete and steel. It will also have two 12 foot lanes with two 6 foot shoulders. Officials believe this bridge will be much safer than the current one.
Workers will have 250 working days to complete the project. County leaders tell News 25 the old bridge will eventually be closed during the project. No official word yet on just when that will be.
