Biloxi apartment fire leaves one person dead

This morning, Biloxi Fire Department responded to an apartment fire that left one victim dead.

Firefighters responded to the Westwick Apartments in Biloxi at about 11:55 a.m. where units found heavy smoke coming from a window in a downstairs apartment. An interior attack was initiated to knock the fire down at which point they found one victim dead inside the bedroom.

At this time, the fire appears to have started in the bedroom, but the cause is still under investigation.

News 25 spoke to the next door neighbor of the apartment where the fire took place who tells us she saw the fire and immediately searched for a phone to make the 911 call. Neighbor Francine Johnson said, “I’m sorry about what happened. I don’t know what else to do. It just pains me to see somebody in there like that. He couldn’t get up. He was bedridden. I don’t know what was wrong with him, but he was my neighbor and he had been sick.”

Johnson tells News 25 that two older men lived inside the apartment, but only the one who died was inside the residence at the time of the fire.
