Bike Lane Safety Concerns
With the increased number of bike lanes popping up in the city of Biloxi, police officers remind drivers to use extra precaution while sharing the road with cyclists.
Biloxi Public Works Department has added five miles of bike lanes in the past few months. With the road widening construction going on around the city, more bike lanes are likely to be added on the roads. Police urge drivers to treat the bikers with the same respect as other vehicles. Biloxi Traffic Section Supervisor Sergeant Brian Dykes said, “We’ve had a couple of accidents with bicyclists being struck by motorists but there weren’t bike lanes present at that time. That might have been some of the driving forces into putting them in here, just giving them an extra safety buffer. A cushion to make people aware that a bicyclist is there by painting lines on the road. That tends to get people’s attention.”
Biloxi police also remind drivers the bike lanes are not extra turn lanes. You are not allowed to cross into the designated bike lanes while driving a motor vehicle.
