Bigger than Basketball: St. Patrick’s Gaunce preaching ‘fight like crazy’ ahead of battle with cancer

St. Patrick Head Girls Basketball Coach Dave Gaunce was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer the day before Thanksgiving.

Just yesterday, his daughters started a GoFundMe page on his behalf, which has already raised more than $10,000 and counting.

Now, tonight, Gaunce coaching in his final game before starting chemotherapy.

Lady Fighting Irish playing host to Tylertown in a region 8 class 3A showdown.

St. Patrick drops this one 45-29, but sometimes, it’s bigger than the final score.

Coach Gaunce was kind enough to catch up with News 25 after the game about what it means to him and his team to fight like crazy. “That’s what I always tell our athletes after we go out on the field for football or on the court for basketball, just get out there and fight. Do what we do, but just fight like crazy. Well now, it’s time for this old guy to fight like crazy. It’s my turn to kind of do what I preach to them to do, and that’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to pray first and we’re going to honor God first. And then we’re going to fight this thing like crazy. And like I say, there’s going to be an unbelievable story to tell on the other side of this.”

Coach says he’ll most likely be out for the next week, but certainly hopes to return this season.
