Big Brothers and Big Sisters Banquet
A group of high school seniors from Ocean Springs were honored today for lending a helping hand to some younger students.
It was all part of Ocean Springs High School’s annual banquet for its Big Brothers and Big Sisters program. Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves was the special guest speaker.
The program allows high school seniors to mentor elementary and middle school kids who are going through a tough time. Some have special needs and some just need a friend to talk to. The seniors say the program is fulfilling because they get to mentor the younger students while learning a thing or two themselves. Ambassador mentor Kassidy Biss said, “We both learn from each other. She learns from me how to be a good, upstanding citizen within Ocean Springs and then I learn from her how to be a big sister. I already am a big sister but I learned even more skills than I’ve ever learned before.” “Personally, I feel like today is you’re doing something right for someone else and we’re being rewarded for it, I guess you could say and we made a difference in a little person’s life,” said Ambassador mentor Eric Lucas.
The students also enjoyed a special video highlighting their journeys with their little brothers and sisters, complete with quotes from the youngsters about how much they will miss their graduating seniors.
