Best ways to prevent PTSD flares during fireworks

While many prepare to celebrate the new year, some are preparing for one of the most stressful times of their year.

Many military veterans experience post-traumatic stress disorder triggered by new year’s celebrations such as the booms of fireworks.

Veteran and President of Crusaders for Veterans Kevin Cuttill suggests getting in touch with veteran neighbors and warning them about potential fireworks you plan to set off.

For the veterans, Cuttill suggests trying to find a quiet place to stay during the night.

If there are no quiet places nearby, turn the television volume up loud or wear headphones that play music. Crusaders for Veterans President/ Founder Kevin Cuttill said, “We all know Americans love fireworks. We all enjoy the bings, bangs and booms, but be considerate of your neighbor. You really don’t want flare ups and you really don’t want people aggravating a situation that can’t be avoided.”

Cuttill says to be aware of non-veteran citizens suffering with PTSD as well.
