Bells across America celebrating the signing of U.S. Constitution

Sunday marked Constitution Day, celebrating the signing of our governing document in 1787.

One local organization marked the anniversary by ringing their bells.

The daughters of the American Revolution gathered by the fountain of Centennial Plaza as part of a Bells across America celebration.

The ladies gathered to share the history of the important document and read the preamble of the constitution.

Closing out the ceremony, the ladies rang their bells for one minute in solitude of freedom, as many did across the country when the clock struck 4 p.m. eastern time.

Bells across America starts the beginning of Constitution Week.

Becky Rutz with the DAR shares the importance and symbolism of the day. “To inform the public the Constitution was finished and signed, the church bells in Philadelphia rang. So, now we ring other bells. We really shouldn’t be because it’s the Constitution that gives us our freedom and our rights. We need to not only celebrate that, but we need to make sure our children know that.”
