Beauvoir to hold Pilgrimage to Unknown Soldier

The annual Pilgrimage to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier wreath ceremony is set for Saturday at 11 on the Beauvoir grounds.

The fallen Confederate was found in 1979 when a Hattiesburg man found his 117-year-old remains on a battlefield in Vicksburg.

In 1981, the marble tomb was placed over him and he was given the distinction of being the Unknown Confederate Soldier for the Confederate States of America.

In 1983, he was awarded the Confederate Congressional Medal of Honor.

Beauvoir’s unknown Confederate soldier is the only unknown Confederate soldier in the world that has received a pilgrimage.

Kitsaa Stevens with Beauvoir Development and Programs said, “It’s important to remember our history and honor all of those who have sacrificed for us to be the great nation that we are today cause all of the little bits and pieces of history put together make us who we are today, so the more we can honor things that happened in our past, the better we will be in our future.”

All it costs to participate in the pilgrimage is general admission to Beauvoir.
