Beach Pier in Pascagoula Closed for Amenity Construction

The Beach Pier across from Beach Park will be closed from September 2nd to September 10th to allow for more amenities to be constructed. After September 10th, pier visitors will find two new access points to the pier that will allow for handicap accessibility, a new shower and drinking fountain, as well as trash receptacles that will complement the area.

Phase I of the Promenade construction was completed last fall. The new access points at the pier, shower, and water fountain are just three components of Phase II. This phase will also include lighting upgrades to the pier and two seating shade structures, as well as two pedestrian bridges over existing canals.

"We are looking forward to being able to offer more amenities on the beachfront," said Parks and Recreation Director, Darcie Crew.

The total cost for this promenade project is $1.62 million, and was being funded by the Mississippi Department of Transportation ($828,240); US Department of Housing and Urban Development Economic Development Initiative ($500,000). The funding for the amenities comes from two grants totaling $300,000 from Tidelands funding spread across fiscal years 2012 and 2014. Funding for future phases of this project are not yet in hand.

The goal of the Promenade project is to provide a safe and walkable beachfront for residents and visitors. Funding for future phases of this project are not yet in hand, but it has been submitted as a project under the RESTORE Act. All phases should be finished in 2015.
