Bayou View Third Graders Have Green Thumbs

Some third graders at Bayou View Elementary School got in touch with their green thumbs over the past couple of months.
Pine Hills Nursery out of Pass Christian hosted a growing competition for several schools this year called “The Third Grade Cabbage Grow Off.” Students who participated were each given a cabbage to take home and care for. After several months of caring for the cabbages at home, the kids brought their hard work to class for a weigh-in. Not all cabbages made it back to the classroom, but each child got a certificate for effort.
Cabbages ranged in size from just a few ounces all the way up to six pounds. There was even a prize of $100 for the first place cabbage.
Some students had different strategies for growing their cabbages. “I put it in a big pot where it was sunny and then I watered it and put fertilizer in it,” said third grader Peyton LeBlanc. Third grader Parker Zahedi said, “I learned that cabbages can grow really big. I didn’t know they could grow this big, but they can and it doesn’t really eat like food food. It just eats fertilizer and it makes it grow bigger if you do feed it fertilizer.”
Pine Hills Nursery is gaining interest from other schools along the Coast and hopes to include more schools in the cabbage grow off next year.
