Battle of Midway Ceremony at Keesler Air Force Base
In June of 1942, the U.S. Navy overpowered the Japanese in the Battle of Midway, a battle which still has an impact 76 years later.
Tuesday morning on Keesler Air Force Base, the Center for Naval Aviation Training Unit held a ceremony to commemorate The Battle of Midway which is a battle that is considered the turning point of World War II. CNATTU Commanding Officer Timothy Knapp said, “Our training mission allows us to share some of that history.”
“A lot of these people are going out to the aircraft carriers and the destroyers and doing the same jobs these people were doing 76 years ago.”
The Battle of Midway was a decisive naval battle in the Pacific Theater and it happened six months after Pearl Harbor. Electrician’s Mate First Class Salvador Ronquillo said, “We were able to in a way bring Japan to a realization that America is strong.”
Even 76 years later, that feeling of pride remains the same. AG2 Blaine Allen said “We look back on things like this to remember where we came from.”
“We take part of learning some of the material that was critical in winning the war.”
